SAT - 4.5 Brainstorming Strategies for Writing Your SAT Essay

One of the most misunderstood parts of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is the essay. Yet, if you plan, prepare and practice properly it will be the easiest part of the whole test. So, take the time to practice essay brainstorming.

Strategy #1 Choose Sides

The first thing you need to do after you read the essay prompt is decide whether you are pro or con. Every SAT essay prompt will be a YES or a NO question, so choose yes or no. Even if the question could be answered with a “that depends” don’t go there, stay with yes or no.

Once you have chosen your side, stick with it. Don’t change your mind or vacillate between the two sides. It will cost you, if you do.

Strategy #2 Outline Your Plan

After you decide whether you are pro or con take about five minutes or so to brainstorm your topic. This step will help you stay organized and give your essay a polished look. Your goal is to write about 4 to 5 paragraphs that will take up most of the room for writing.

So, write your introduction sentence and the two or three points you will use to defend your position. Then, decide what examples you will use to illustrate your points. Finally, write your closing sentence.

Now, using this information build an outline for your essay and use the outline as a guide to write each paragraph.

  • Introduction
  • Point one
  • Point two
  • Point three
  • Closing

Strategy #3 Use Appropriate Examples

As you write your essay remember to use appropriate examples for your points. You can tap into examples from your favorite books, history, current affairs, pop culture, school, personal experience and your imagination. It doesn’t even matter if the example is real or not as long as it supports your point.

Strategy #4 Answer the Question

It is absolutely imperative that you answer the question they are asking. It won’t matter how good your essay is if you answer a question different from the one they are asking. So after you write your outline, reread the question and verify you are answering the question they are asking. If not redo your outline.

You must answer the appropriate question or you will get zero points. OUCH!

Strategy #4.5 Always Close

If you get caught up in the writing of your essay and you don’t close you will pay dearly. You must close! The introduction paragraph and the closing paragraph are the two most important parts of your essay. Leave either one of them out and you will receive a low score even if your message is awesome.

So, close with a bang and catch their attention with a call to action. The closing can be the difference between a good score and a great score.

Remember brainstorming will help you write an organized, interesting and clean essay. But, it won’t happen unless you take action and practice the strategies above. Invite you to learn more about SAT Prep at http://yourSATcoach.com

Whether the answer is yes or no, it’s time to prepare for the new year. So, grab a pen, some paper and sit down to re-evaluate your desires, goals and plans.

4 Questions to ask yourself about your goals:

  • Am I heading in the right direction?

  • Are my actions getting me closer to my goals?
  • If your plans are no longer in step with your goals make the proper adjustments. Rewrite your goals if necessary. Your goals, plans and actions must all be working toward the same end or you fail. Success will come from thinking, preparing and planning.

    ACTION STEP #3

Put these goals in order and imagine how you are going to make these things happen. Then begin taking the necessary actions needed to complete your goals. Remember, goals will not be completed without action.

Attending Julliard - The Gruelling Acceptance Process (Well Worth the Effort)

A Great School to Further Arts Studies But Competition is Tough and Admissions Officers are Very Choosy

Attending Julliard is amongst the most prestigious achievement that any musician, dancer or dramatist can achieve. The school is well known for their prestigious honors and the prestigious people who leave Julliard to pursue their passions. The acceptance process into Julliard is a rigorous process as they strive only to find the best in music, drama and dance.

The Committee on Admissions selects students based on their performances at competitive auditions that are held at The Julliard School and other cities around the country. Members of the faculty of Julliard evaluate the students and in-person auditions are required by all students. Many exceptional students will be invited for live auditions. Students receive notification of their auditions one month prior to their audition to give them time to prepare their pieces. Students may not apply more than twice to the Dance and Music Divisions or three times to the Drama Divisions if they have received unfavorable results in the past. Students who are selected must also begin their studies in the fall semester. Students are not allowed to enroll in the winter and begin in the spring. Admissions are not determined by any other factors except the performance of the student in the in-person or live audition.

Drama and Music students are required to be high school graduates or possess a G.E.D. Julliard does not have a minimum or maximum age limit. They do tend to admit those students who are in their prime for the learning and training that Julliard provides. Many students may be young adults in their teens while others may be older. The priority of Julliard is to insure the artistic development of their students. Dance candidates must also be high school graduates or have their G.E.D., however, the Dance Division has an Early Admissions program that allows dance candidates to apply during their junior year of high school or be at least age 16. Julliard does not require that students take tests such as the ACT or SAT, but if they have taken these tests they are encouraged to send the results to Julliard.

Applicants are also responsible for insuring that they provide complete education documents and transcripts to Julliard. Students who have attended high school or college must provide official transcripts from all schools. All undergraduate applicants must also provide a letter of recommendation from a high school academic teacher that teaches English, history or other language arts course. Letters of Recommendation are required, as Julliard wants to insure that students are able to speak, read, write and comprehend properly. They also want their students to be able to be effective speakers, advocates, teachers and community partners. Drama Division students are required to submit a letter of recommendation from their drama teacher and discuss their work as an actor or actress.

Students that obtain a position learning and training at Julliard in Dance and Drama are eligible for either the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree or the Julliard Diploma.

Undergraduate music students are eligible for a Bachelor of Music degree with four years of study. Undergraduate music students are also eligible for the Julliard Diploma with three years of study.

Consider this quote: “The transforming role of Juilliard is to help talented students harness their dedication to become communicative artists, imbued with the passion and understanding to reach within themselves to affect and move audiences. MBA Applications and Your Application Essay

Ivy League admission officials revealed that the best chance of a candidate to get accepted lies in his application essay. That is why your purpose in writing your MBA essay should be similar to the purpose of a college admission essay. Years back, weren’t you thinking that your goal was to make your dream university think that you’re a worthy student to walk through its halls? The same goes for the MBA application. Double the effort you exerted in writing your college application essay but think along the same lines. Below are reasons why MBA essays are not resumes or a reiteration of your grades and accomplishments.

Limited space is allotted for MBA application essays, so there is simply no space for unnecessary details. Skills and academic excellence are expected and commonplace in the competition. After all, no one in his right mind will aspire for an MBA if his brain dried out in college or in writing his college application essay. Your SAT scores and excellent academic records might have helped to get you in your dream college. Collegiate achievements undoubtedly have had a role to play in getting you a good job. But members of an MBA admission board are not to be steam-rolled by grades and professional history alone. If you’re an overachiever, you are likely just one of the many overachievers trying to get into the same MBA program. You all have good academic records and professional accomplishments but impressive resumes don’t really cut it in for the admissions board. There is no way to get accepted in an MBA program without distinguishing yourself from other applicants except in an MBA essay. So weeding out information like these is not only wise but practical.

Similar to how a college admission essay is evaluated, MBA admission boards evaluate MBA essays for traits and non-academic qualities of the candidates. Obviously, personality is not measured in grades. The members of the board want ambition, honesty, maturity, diplomacy, and other traits in their students. They evaluate inter and intra-personal strengths in their potential students. They want dynamism and enthusiasm — individuals who have interests outside the academe and actually experienced what it’s like to live (if you want to be poetic about it). If you recall, your high school adviser gave you the same advice regarding your jargon habit and verbose essay. Do not repeat the same mistakes in your MBA essay. Flamboyant words take up too much space and a highly-technical language hides your personality which defeats the purpose of your MBA essay.

You might be surprised but Ivy League admission officials actually claim that the best essays they’ve read (read: those they accepted) often talks about a key memory, an important experience, a hobby - things the authors felt passionate about. The topics seem like the kinds people use in writing a college admission essay but they are highly effective for MBA application essays. The two are similar to each other although at varying levels. A college admission essay shows universities what a student wants to achieve and how they are influenced by the people around them. The same goes for the MBA; the board wants to see how you’ve matured because of your experiences. They are not interested in your high marks but how you achieved them. Or more likely, how you managed to have a life while performing excellently in academics. So take a deep breath and erase all resume info in your MBA essay. After all, the resume is already part of your application.

Post Secondary Education Can Advance Your Career

Post Secondary Education includes vocational, trade, or technical educational institutions, or career schools and colleges, oriented toward developing skills for specific occupations. Post Secondary Schools prepare for entry-level positions, and programs of study can vary greatly in length and intensity. Some programs for diplomas or certificates require just weeks, while other certificate programs require months of preparation. Post Secondary Schools also provide programs for acquiring associate degrees that may take two or three years.

Post Secondary Education programs train in specialized job requirements. Occupational programs provide a well-rounded education that generally includes English, grammar, and writing skills; as well as math and computer skills, and general sciences. Programs require additional courses specific to the field of study. Programs of study in Post Secondary Schools and colleges are offered in computer technology, paralegal services, professional office skills, biomedical studies, mechanics, electronics, accounting, cosmetology, computer aided drafting (CAD), graphic design, commercial arts, engineering, business, and health, to name a few.

Post Secondary students choose this avenue for gaining skills in order to improve their employment options and to speed up job opportunities. Recent high school graduates as well as older adult students making career changes are prime candidates for Post Secondary Education programs. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, incomes can be more optimistic with associate degree, gaining about $7,000 annually over a high school education.

Job markets in the fields of Computer Technology and Health Care are projected to be among the fastest growing occupational fields for the next several years. Certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees are all options in technology and health care programs in Post Secondary Schools and career colleges.

Planning to attend a Post Secondary School should include careful research for finding quality training in the type of career program being sought. Some schools focus on particular technologies. Look for accreditation. Post Secondary Schools should be accredited by the state in which they are located. Iran is an Advanced Nation with Strong University Programs

Many believe that Iran has such strong University Programs that there is no way to prevent them from designing and building the greatest weapons in the world and therefore it is unwise to take a hard line negotiation stance with them. Well some of this is true and some is public relations, but you cannot negotiate with Nation States who have nuclear weapons and support international terrorist organizations.

Recently in an online think tank Irans academic quality, achievement and University programs were discussed and one think tank member stated; Iran produces more competent engineers than the US combined, more than 67% of US advanced degrees go to foreign born individuals.

Ever ask yourself why everyone comes to the US to be educated? We have the best education system. And remember the US economy is so robust many students get hired out before completing their advance degrees. Industry is so hard up due to such incredible economic output and productivity and such low unemployment that this is the result. Also be careful about the advance degree thing. The right brothers were bicycle mechanics, Bill Gates left school and most of the greatest scientists of all times did not have advanced degrees until after their discoveries. Consider all this in 2006.

The 3 Simple Strategies That Promise Good Grades In Exams!

I am not a bright student to start off with. My school results were barely hitting the mark. In fact, I did so badly once that my parents were considering sending me to an overseas University, for the local Universities would simply reject me.

I was groped with fear. At that moment, I decided to put in more effort and pain to do something about my studies.

Tuition, seminars, extra lessons and even counseling, I have been to them. It was then and there that I learnt powerful strategies and methods to prepare and study for exams. And I took the opportunity to test out various studying strategies and tips during my College days. Through this period of massive trial and error, I was able to sift out the effective strategies from the ineffective ones and apply them in my studies.

The outcome? My grades jumped from ‘E’, ‘F’, and C for Chemistry, Physics and Math respectively, to DISTINCTIONS in all the subjects. My peers jaws were literally hanging in the air when they saw my results. It was too good to be true that I did not believe it myself. I literally became an overnight success in studies! But deep down inside me, I knew what made the difference.

My purpose here is NOT to impress you but rather tell you that if an underdog like me can achieve such a feat, YOU can do much better than me by simply understanding my strategy. If I were to use 3 words to describe the essence of my study strategy, then it simply has to be Understand, Memorize and Apply. Let me illustrate my point.

    Understanding is the Master Key.

If theres one major thing an exam is testing, it has to be your understanding of the material. Understanding is therefore the foremost important thing you will have to do.

While this seems common sense to most of you, most students are not making the effort to understand the material, especially so when faced with more difficult concepts. They avoid, skip or simply give up. True understanding requires students to think critically and then question themselves about the concepts.

I always believe that there is an objective for you to learn a certain concept in a subject or topic. Heres what I usually do. When I learnt a particular concept or theory, I would relate it to daily life. How can I apply it to various applications? For instance, when I studied physics and for the chapter of forces, I would imagine myself sitting in a car and visualize how forces would cause the car to move and whats stopping it.

The more I use the concepts I had learnt from classes and apply it to scenarios in daily life, understanding comes hand in glove. It’s like exercising my brain muscles.

Another way to understand clearly a concept is to practice the key questions. Key questions simply refer to questions that test the concepts heavily. This improves understanding quickly and saves valuable time. Practicing questions is essential. Not only does it help in understanding, it allows you to verify whether you have understood the concepts correctly.

    Memorize what you have understood

The common sensical thing to do before an exam is to memorize what you have learnt and understand. If you have time, spend a little effort to remember questions that you find it difficult to do. Heres a past mistake I made. While I was preparing for my exams, I attempted a truckload of questions including quite a few tricky questions. I understood the concepts tested. However during the actual exam, a similar tricky question came out and to my horror, the answer slipped my mind! Because Instead of penning my answer down immediately, I had to spend 30 minutes to think out the solution! Imagine how much time I could have saved if I had remembered it.

But what about subjects like law, history or even biology where there are so many things to memorize, how can you do it effectively?

Have you ever wondered why the lawyers and doctors manage to remember what they have learnt even after they graduate? In short, to memorize effectively what you have learnt for exams requires effective memory techniques and the secret to have a longer lasting memory is to constantly use what you have learnt. The lawyers and doctors are constantly applying what they have learnt into their daily life. Its almost unforgettable.

One of the reasons why I dont need to memorize a lot of stuff before exams is because I am constantly reflecting on what I have learnt. If I was taught quantum physics, then for the whole week, my thoughts would be about quantum physics questions, equations, concepts, definitions. Think, reflect, question.

If you are not the kind of person who is obsessive with learning, what you can do is to revise once a week on what you have learnt, then the memorizing workload before exams would definitely be lighter.

    Apply

Exams not only test a student whether he has fully understood the concepts but exams tests students ability to apply the concepts.

In order to excel in exams, the ability to apply is an essential skill. One of the ways to improve on application skills is practising questions.

During college, I’ve found a good way to hone application skills is to practice questions that test you from different angles. For instance, to test you on the concept Force = Acceleration X Mass, there are 3 ways which the exams can test you upon. Sometimes, you will be told to find force, sometimes you will be told to find acceleration, and sometimes it will be mass.

You would need to practice on all 3 ways to do well for exams. Of course at higher level you would be required to apply to more difficult questions and concepts but you can still use the technique to improve your ability to apply.

When I was preparing for my exams, I would ask myself questions like “what different and possible types of questions would the teachers test us?”

The trick about scoring high marks in exams is simply master all the possible ways that the exams can test you. Imagine you have mastered all the questions, how would you score?

How can you possibly find out the different ways that the examiners would test you?
