Motivation: The Key to Success

When we consider the keys to that elusive thing called success, we sometimes think of talent, money, or luck. In reality, success requires plain, old-fashioned, hard work. And plain, old-fashioned, hard work requires motivation. In a very real sense, motivation is the most important key to success. Successful people are those who can get themselves busy as soon as something needs to be done, instead of procrastinating. There are many other ways that motivation contributes to success.

For one thing, if you are motivated, you can nip problems in the bud. Many times, when something is going wrong, whether in business or home life, the problem has been brewing for a long time. For instance, a rebellious teenager was probably a disrespectful pre-teen and a disobedient child. Dealing with the disobedient child, even though it means you have to get out of your easy chair to spend time nurturing and training them, is much more pleasant and effective than trying to fix the rebellious teen.

Of course, we all have problems that we could not foresee. Child raising tends to happen when we’re not looking, and often we don’t have the wisdom or expertise to make the right choices early. However, some of our difficulties could easily have been handled earlier if we had just been a bit more motivated. Think about equipment breakdowns, or even health problems. Taking action early is almost always the best thing you can do.

Another way motivation helps bring about success is that people will admire you for your energy and effectiveness. Your family will appreciate you for the things you help with around the house. Your bosses will be pleased with you and your clients will pass on recommendations to others. There’s nothing quite as valuable to a business as word-of-mouth advertising. And all the accolades will help you feel good about yourself and motivated to do more.

Just like procrastination and failure can form a vicious downward spiral, motivation and accomplishment can give you momentum in an upward climb. You get “on a roll.” The more you accomplish, the quicker you get at finishing tasks and doing them well.

Knowing how to motivate yourself is a great boon when struggles come along. It is very easy to get knocked off course or bogged down when your schedule or routine takes a blow. Being skilled at motivation can help you weather these storms. Being motivated gives you a feeling of control when everything around you is out of control. But it all starts from within you. Motivation can’t be relied on to show up from outside! Maybe something will come along that spurs you, but chances are you’ll have to find that drive on your own.

Finally, motivation is an important leadership skill. If you are to reach success, there’s a good possibility the position you desire will be one in which you have to lead and direct those under you. This is particularly true if you hope to have a business become a success. Learn to motivate yourself, and you’ll be well on your way to motivating those you’ve employed.

A NEW View Of You: Stop Denying Your Truth And Start Doing What You Know You Must!

“Oh, uhh, this outfit I bought a few weeks ago feels very tight ‘all of the
sudden’; it’s nothing–probably just some temporary bloating.”

“Oh — I’ll just wear a little larger size for a while, in darker colors, and
accessorize so it’s as if no one will notice, and I’ll look as I always have. Gee, ya
know, even the mirror is deceiving me lately. Hey, it’s alright, I’m still the way I’ve
always been, and this weight increase is a temporary thing…yeah?it’s just a
temporary thing.”

Well, well, well…let’s see here. Let’s have you choose one from the following
“what I’m really doing” factors regarding the above person’s state of mind.

A.) She really is just going through a temporary weight increase, that will, of course, miraculously reverse itself.

B.) She sees a change in her outer self, but because she still sees her inner self in a positive, sparkling way, the inner will “automatically” rectify the outer.

C.) She’s denying she’s gotten fat, and is using every possible justification/ rationalization in the book to avoid having to accept and deal with the now of her life.

C. you say. Hey–you’re right!

Look, you can either put on rose colored glasses and see only what you want
to see. Or, you can choose to look through the eyes of truth and see truly what is.

Don’t beat yourself up because you’ve slipped. No–acknowledge it, determine
to do something about it, and then do it — until you’ve accomplished the change
and/or improvement you’ve set out to.

Remember, you’re not an ostrich who can just stick your head in the sand and
play make believe. You’re a capable, creative, intelligent person who can literally
strengthen her self respect and self esteem through being honest with yourself, and
then taking targeted measures to either re-establish or recreate the context you
want.

It’s always your choice; you can either window dress, sugar coat or deny. Or,
you can say “OK, here’s my truth,” and then learn how wonderful you are through
acting to change or improve.

The former choice will ensure fear, ignorance and despair continue
administering their self debasing, indeed, self constricting hold upon you. The
latter choice will ensure you find parts of yourself you never before knew. Yes,
parts which will serve to enrich and empower you immeasurably!

The 5-Minute Productivity Breakthrough

Do you have something you are putting off?

You might be putting off exercise. You may be putting of writing a business plan. Maybe it’s something else. Whatever it is you are putting off can be achieved if you simply put 5 minutes toward achieving it.

I can almost hear a collective sigh. “Only 5 minutes? Brad, you’ve lost it this time.”

Have I? Not really. If I can get 5 minutes of solid, no-nonsense, best effort, you’ll get more done.

It works very much like Isaac Newton’s theory (cool first name by the way). Newton’s law states an object in motion, tends to stay in motion unless acted on by some external force. All we have to do is get ourselves in as much motion as possible for 5 easy minutes and the rest will take care of itself. You can do 5 minutes can’t you? Sure you can.

Simply tackle your chosen task for 5 minutes. Set a timer and get to it for a full 5 minutes. At the end of the time, decide if you’d like to continue. If not, you’ve met your commitment. You are free to stop. However, more than likely, you will want to continue. You’ll want to finish what you start. Like Newton’s law, you will be in motion, so you will tend to want to stay in motion.

One of the keys to this method is putting forth the very best effort for all 5 of those minutes. No we aren’t allowed to go to the bathroom, eat or watch TV during those minutes. Just focus for a full 5 minutes working on your task.

Here’s a real life example. Your conscience is nagging you to get outside and get some exercise. Your body is saying “I’m tired. I don’t wanna!” Your conscience keeps nagging, your body keeps pushing back. By the way, this is what we call stress, but that discussion is for another day. Anyway, you have a battle on your hands for sure.

How do you deal with it? Simple…Negotiate with yourself. Say “Ok, I’ll take 5 minutes to get dressed and get outside and exercise my very best. At the end of 5 minutes, I can quit. I can easily do 5 minutes…anyone can!”

And think about it, who can’t do 5 minutes of anything? You can do just about anything and do it well for 5 minutes if you put your mind to it. Writing your first small business plan may seem quite overwhelming. But what if you are just viewing it as a 5 minute task? Suddenly, it seems like a small inconvenience to get started. You work for a solid 5 using your very best energy and dedication and you will most likely find something about the process you like. You will want to keep at it. You will want to uncover more opportunities. You will want to keep making progress.

How About A Few Vital Life Questions

Desire and internal motivation are great equalizers. They can make up for a lack of education, a lack of a favorable background, and any number of other life adversities. For years people have been preaching the benefits and value of self-motivation and goals as a way to achieve success, wealth, and happiness. Why, then, do people lose their desire or motivation? One of the reasons is what I call de-motivators.

Lets look at de-motivators. A de-motivator is anythinga person, or a circumstancethat acts upon you in such a way that your interpretation and your subsequent behavior are negative, passive, or self-destructive. There are hundreds of examples of de-motivators; here are just a few:

-negative people,
-people who invalidate you,
-people who dont listen, care, or show interest in you or your thoughts/ideas,
-an incorrect personal interpretation of failure, problems, and/or adversity,
-goals that are consistently too high or too low,
-managers who rely on fear and punishment as motivators.

There are, as I see it, six basic steps to peak performance behavior and results when it comes to self-motivation:

1.know what you want.
2.Know why you want it.
3.Know how you will get it.
4.Know what may stand in your way to achieve it: outside (circumstances, people, events) or inside

(attitudes, emotions, fears, doubts).
5.Become aware of the outside-in and inside-out de-motivators and develop a plan to deal with them,

prevent them or manage them.
6.Do something. Begin. Start.

De-motivators come in all shapes and sizes. They can be your personal demons that no one but you is ever aware of, or they can be a corporate policy or family rule that contributes to an I dont care any more attitude. Apathy is one of the most destructive human emotions when it comes to performance, productivity, happiness, success, motivation, and overall behavior. If you want success, determine what is getting in your way and remove it.

How Many Colors Does Your Life Have?

Many people live a life with only one color. What about you?

They have a very predictable plan (or I’d better say “routine”) in their life. They do the same things every day, day after day for years and years.

They always eat the same types of food, go to the same places on weekends, read the same type of books, meet the same narrow people, and so on.

If you want to picture their life as a rainbow, it has only one color which hardly ever changes. Their life is simply one word boring.

Life is like a confectionary store. There are a lot of different candies that you can choose from.

Some people choose to eat the same candy over and over again for years.

Some others don’t limit themselves to just one type of candy. They like to taste different candies with different tastes, shapes, and colors.

World is full of different sights, sounds, tastes, and feelings.

The more new things you see, hear and feel, the more you’re LIVING your life and making each day count - rather than letting your life pass without enjoying it.

So try new things.

Go to new places.

Be with new people.

Run, if you always walked. Feel the excitement of the speed.

Walk if you always ran. So you can slow down and see more beauty of the world around you.

Meet different types of people other than those you are always with.

Try new activities in your free time something you haven’t done before.

Just do something new something different.

This is the key to success, because it helps you gain new perspectives to set big goals, and gain the courage to go for them.

So make a list of 10 new things you want to try this week.

Then choose 3 of them to do today. They could be as simple as watching a different TV show tonight.

You deserve to taste every taste, feel every feeling, see every sight, and hear every sound in the world.

You deserve to have hundreds of colors in your life rainbow not just even 7 colors.

So make your life a colorful rainbow!

To your success…

Motivation: What If You Didn’t Need It?

Do you beat yourself up emotionally for what seems to be lack of motivation? Are you trying to figure out whats wrong with you and fix it, so that you can get on with the business of living your life the way you want to?

There is a great quote by Jim Rohn that says, If someone is going down the wrong road, he doesnt need motivation to speed him up. What he needs is education to turn him around. You may be asking yourself, what exactly does that mean? I can only tell you what I think it means. If you are on a path that you dont have a natural enthusiasm about, maybe you should stop and really look at whether it is something you should be pursuing. It is better to turn around and start over than to continue down a path that will never lead you to where you want to be. I believe that if you know what you want to create in life, and are lit up about it, you dont need motivation. Why? Because you are pulled into action by something bigger than you are. You clearly see the actions to take and take them without some emotional struggle and battle with yourself to try and get yourself to do something.

If you are clear about your personal mission in life and have the vision for your life that is fulfilling on your mission, you dont need external motivation to get you into action. Clarity of purpose provides the space for the next appropriate action to appear, and clarity of vision provides the desire to take that action. Wouldnt it be amazing to not need external motivation or internal battle to get yourself into action? Your life mission and vision could be the fuel for your life and fulfillment of your dreams.

So, I dare suggest that if you are looking for motivation, make the effort first to get clear about what your life purpose is. Know what your personal mission in life is and create the vision for your life from your mission. When you have done that, you will have an authentic expression of yourself and all the motivation you need to take the actions to fulfill on creating a life worth living.

How to Motivate Other People

An effective manager, or parent, gets the jobs done by motivating and directing the other people in the group. Motivating your colleagues, (or worse your children!), is a skilled and challenging task. An enormous amount of research has been carried out but researchers have not always managed to explain their findings clearly. This article aims to explain how to motivate others in a jargon free way.

There are two main ways people are motivated.
Research in the UK has shown that just over 40% of us are motivated towards pleasure, about 40% away from pain, and almost 20% can be motivated either way.

What do I mean? Well, if you are motivated towards pleasure you are likely to complete work before the deadline so you can have the pleasure of relaxing afterwards, you go to the gym for the pleasure of looking good, you study a course for the pleasure of learning and the new job you can apply for. These people are likely to actively look for ways to improve their work, relationships and life.

If you are motivated away from pain you are likely to complete the work when you have must to avoid the pain of being criticized for not completing it, you go to the gym to avoid the pain of replacing the clothes youve outgrown, you study a course to avoid the pain of being made redundant.

How do you tell how a person is motivated?
You can get a quick rough guide by asking them a question which identifies how they go about making decisions and listen carefully to their answer. For example, you could ask, how do you pick your holiday destination (or car/football team/childrens school/career, etc.)?
People who are motivated towards pleasure will tell you about the great weather/accommodation/journey/food/facilities available. People who are motivated away from pain will tell how it avoids the worst of the heat/the unknowns of new accommodation/long transfers/dodgy food etc.

How does this help?
When you know how a colleague or loved one is motivated, you can ask them to do things in the right way.

For example: imagine you have a tedious task which must be completed before you can start more interesting activities, for a person motivated towards pleasure it would motivate them if you said;
Once weve finished this we can begin (the barbeque/interesting activity).
For a person who is motivated away from pain it would be more effective if you said;
We need to finish this or the consequences will be (well lose the contract/we wont have time for a barbeque/etc).

Now, I know this has been a tiny, tiny, snapshot into how to motivate others. There is a full free report available on my website www.crossroadslifecoaching.co.uk/jobsatisfaction.htm

Strength, Hope and Old-Fashioned Chutzpah Helped Her Survive the Challenge of a Lifetime

A hike in Californias Sequoia National Park turned deadly when Shannon Parker split from her group to grab her sunglasses from the car. Before she could get them, she found herself face-to-face with the lion and came to a daunting realization.

“I knew exactly what it was when I made eye contact with it, she said in an ABC interview. It was either the mountain lion or me. One of us was going to die.”

The cat attacked, catching Parkers head in its jaws. Parker fought the cat for six minutes before she was able to free her face and scream to alert her friends. They chased it off with rocks and a pocketknife, but not before Parker sustained severe injury to her right eye, along with deep gouges in her thigh.

After a surgery failed to repair her eye, doctors fitted her with a
prosthetic. While Parker suffered no life-threatening injuries, the trauma to her face was devastating; Parker said the most challenging aspect of the attack was dealing with the disfiguring injuries she suffered.

Her plastic surgeon played a huge role in helping her recover when he told her that hed be able to repair the damage to her face.
“And that right there, I mean, it just changed my attitude; it changed the hope that I had. It changed everything, she told CNN. And then, I knew not only was I alive, but I was going to progress.”

Progress meant not only recovering from her injuries, but recovering from her emotional trauma. Part of Parkers solution has been to seek meaning in her experiences. Less than a year after the attack, she went back to Sequoia National Park to revisit the spot where she struggled for her life. Now shes working to educate the public about what to do if a mountain lion attacks and, because she says that she would have stayed with her group had she seen warning signs posted, shes working to place them where mountain lions might be a danger to hikers.

According to Parker, her recovery, though difficult, gets better as each day passes. “I believe that my strength and hope has got me to where I am today.

Tips For Finding A Special Gift

Everyone will agree that it is much more difficult to find a special gift for a person you are close to, no matter what the occasion. In such cases people usually spend hours and hours without luck. It is the same for me, I always need lots and lots of time when I’m looking for a present for someone I love, no matter if it is for a birthday or any other occasion. Just by accident I once found a great special present for my sister.

I was actually very lucky as she is very limited in what she can wear, being allergic to all types of metal jewelry. So that bracelet I found was made of two lines of glass beads and was just in the colors that she likes and wears a lot. It was stretchy so size didn’t matter at all and the most important - there was no metal on it at all.

On another shopping trip of mine I luckily came upon a special gift for my godchild. She has always been into the heart shaped things, and what I found was a wide variety of different colors and sizes of hearts shaped out of glass. I also found a heart shaped bow made of glass so I purchased some hearts and the bowl, making a very nice and warming set of crystal hearts.

After a few lucky occasions I realized that it was actually much easier to get those special gifts when they are not the priority and you are not looking for them at all. This made me take the decision and now I am looking at such items all year round.

It is better like this because first there is no pressure and shopping itself becomes much more pleasant and relaxed and second it saves me money, because shopping all year round I often get the sale prices, and even if they are not on sale it is much easier to get a thing each month instead in getting all together in December.

And in case I already managed to convince you that it is better to do it my way, I will give you some advice on how to make it even easier to find a special gift. It is very simple but it helps a lot. Just make a list of all the beloved people you usually buy for and make sure to have it always with you. Any time you find a gift suitable for a person on your list just buy it and cross the name off.

Then when holidays come you just buy for the ones still on the list. It is also a good idea to arrange a place where to store all those, because it already had to buy another present because I could not remember where the one that I bought earlier was. Being sensible and organized in purchasing the presents for you closest people can both help you save money and time finding a special gift, and make holidays much more relaxed and pleasant.

Along Came a Spider

It had been a lean month and both Ron and I were worried about paying the bills. It’s hard to run three companies with no bank loan! In fact, it was the first time we had actually lost money and been in the red. That usually didn’t happen to us. To make matters worse, both our son’s birthdays were coming up, Christmas was right around the corner, we owed money to some associates and company bills loomed.

What to do, what to do.

Trouble is the more you worry about these sorts of things, the bigger the problem gets. The worry actually pushes the solution farther and farther away from you and it becomes like a runaway train.

I was so upset by all this that I simply couldn’t focus on anything. I couldn’t even hear my inner voice for the answer like I usually did. The emotion of the problem just closed the door. So I asked a few very intuitive friends of mine and all said that everything would be ok, and to just hold on for a while longer. Great news certainly, but it didn’t help the fact that the bills were still sitting on Ron’s desk today.

That Saturday, Ron and I decided to just put the problem up onto God’s shelf and let Him worry about it for a while. We then went to a place called “Adventure Landing” and played a little miniature golf with our boys as we both thought the beautiful sunshine and fun atmosphere would do us both good. After we got the clubs, we walked over to the first hole and I leaned on a wooden fence to watch my oldest son start the game off.

Then out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a very tiny spider on the top of the post. I marveled at how small it was and watched it dance around the top of the fence. Then the funniest thing happened . I began to sense that it was actually mad at me!! Do spiders get mad at people? I have never really thought about it and had certainly never “felt” it before, but this one was actually mad at me!

Extraordinary!! I could sense it in every bone of my body. Needless to say I moved my arm from the post and instantly felt that the spider was relieved. Then it danced around a second more and lifted it’s back-end up into the air. A stream of it’s “web” came out and danced in the sunlight. Then the air lifted the spider off the post and it rose into the air!! It was just like that scene from Charlotte’s Web when Charlotte’s children all leave Wilbur. As I watched, I noticed a tree nearby and thought that perhaps the little guy would land there, but it instead rose higher and higher into the atmosphere. I watched it until my youngest son yelled at me to watch him putt.

Extraordinary.

Clearly this was a message from my friend God. I knew it immediately. God has this little habit of always being able to get my attention, and when He can’t get me to listen, He sends His messages to me in other forms. This time He wanted to tell me to have faith in Him. All I had to do was trust Him and He would take me to great heights! Just like the spider trusted the wind to carry him safely to another place, God wanted me to do the same.

I carried the little spider’s message in my mind for the rest of the day. It really was incredibly beautiful, especially coming from a creature that I have always hated. I HATE spiders!!! Somehow though, this was different. So I wished my little friend Godspeed and knew that he would land safely.
That evening, my husband and I sat in his office and chatted about some solutions to our dilemma. As I sat on his couch I happened to glance over at his bookcase and noticed two books were crooked. Then I looked at their titles.

The bottom book was titled “Divine Guidance”.

The book right on top of it was called “Full Speed Ahead”.

No need to hit me on the head with a cosmic two-by-four! I immediately got the message. Ron and I are being guided and will be fine. Message received!!! We’ll solve the problem by trusting our intuition and changing our focus to one that knows we will be fine!!! We won’t focus on what is hitting the fan and will instead focus on the future. We’ll focus on prosperity and where we want to go!!!
Now here comes the good part of this story.

Right now, this minute … THIS IS YOUR GOLDEN MOMENT OF REALIZATION.

Choose to do it, and you will. Choose to change your life and you will. Choose to take off like the little spider did. Life is actually as simple or as difficult as we make it. Imagine that you are an artist facing a blank canvas. You can make the picture as simple or as complex as you like. You can choose the colors and the theme of the painting. Choose to make your painting simple, and it will be. Choose to make your painting difficult, and it will be. It’s as simple as that.

Choose to move forward and watch your life transform!

This is the hope of a better way and even better things yet to come! It is time that you learned to completely trust your intuition. Run your life and your business from your heart, NOT from your head!!! Remove your doubts and inhibitions for a brief moment while you walk down this new road. You can always go back to them if you wish. There is a whole new world waiting for you, a world filled with light, love, and unlimited opportunities! Ready? Of course you are. You wouldn’t be reading this article now if you weren’t.

Here are the four things that I did … change, determination, focus and intuition.

1. CHANGE You must be willing to Change! You know that person your family thinks you are? Is it the person you want to be? CHANGE! BE yourself! Dont be who THEY think you are! Be who YOU think you are!

2. DETERMINATION — Never give up, no matter what.

3. FOCUS - Don’t focus on the negative and what is hitting the fan … focus on the positive and your new life! Focus on where you are going, not where you are!

4. INTUITION — Trust it! Run your life from your heart, NOT your head!!! Trust your instinct. You can call this anything you like … your inner voice, intuition, God … whatever you want. It’s really just semantics. Learn to trust that voice. Listen to it. Talk to it. It will change your life.
You too can change your life and reach your dream because if you have faith you can do anything!!
Just like the little spider did.
