Step 1: Accept that everyone is NOT going to like you.
As children, we are taught to be nice and get along with everybody as part of our socialization. In our adulthood, we quickly find out that everyone will not like us no matter how nice we are, or how well we get along with other people. Understand that no matter what you do, you cannot please everyone all the time. Develop a mantra that helps you to stay focused on your own personal positivity, and say it as much as you need to. You have to like yourself enough for everyone!

Step 2: Pack Your Baggage!
Carrying the effects of negative or counter-productive experiences weighs on you. Some of us tend to harbor these thoughts, feelings and concepts in our daily life - often without realizing how damaging they are to our self-perception and how we treat others. Pack your baggage every day. Whatever it is that you are holding on to that is causing you to have a not-so-positive attitude, or a less than stellar view of yourself, put it away.

Try this exercise. Imagine a closet. Visualize yourself opening the door and putting in all of the things, people, thoughts, and memories, that affect your confidence. Shove them in if they dont fit! Now, imagine locking the door. Know that when you put your baggage away it is gone. Tomorrow you create a new closet to put more away. You can never open the closets you have locked. They are gone. You control the activity of those things. They dont control you.

Step 3: Make Peace With Your Shortcomings.
So you always wanted to play basketball, but you werent tall enough to make the team? Ok, Good. You already know that you are not tall enough and you will never BE tall enough. Let it go. You cannot change it. There is no magic potion. Accept that there is no growth spurt in your future. Make peace with it and move on. Condition yourself to not waste time on things you cannot change. Instead, redirect your energy to things that you can influence.

Step 4: Flip the Script!
Simply said, Flip the Script means Do the opposite. If you are normally a shy, quiet person, pick a day to be outgoing and outspoken. If you are an aggressive personality, try taking a mild approach for the day and see what happens. Talkative people - try listening for a day. Followers - become leaders for the day. You can be anything you want to be, and you can do whatever you set your mind to!

Learn from your results and use what you find to build a better you. Flipping the script doesnt mean that you have to abandon who you are. Its an exercise in evaluating alternatives. Just because youve always done something a particular way, doesnt mean that you always have to do it that way - especially if it isnt productive for you.

Step 5: Mind Your Mindset!
Henry Ford said, Whether you think that you can, or that you cant, you are usually right. Pay attention to the feelings you project throughout your day. Negativity attracts more negativity. Positivity attracts more positivity. Indecisiveness attracts stagnation. If you are in need of money, dont focus on not having money! Focus instead on ways to get the money you need. The Law of Attraction is always at work. Use it to your advantage!

These remedies are concepts that have been taught by psychologists, psychiatrists, motivational speakers, and successful business owners well beyond my years on this earth. I invite you to challenge yourself, and see how applying any of them to your daily life can make a difference in your business relationships and your personal achievements.

Recently I was engaged in a conversation with an executive who wanted answers concerning social networking in the Relationship Economy. Not unlike many executives this individual wanted answers without taking the time to understand the process. During our conversation he put me on hold three times, brought in another executive to the call, interrupted my explanations almost every time and in the background I could hear his cell phone ringing and his blackberry buzzing. When we were engaged you could feel his sense of urgency to want the answer but his attention span limited him from hearing the answer.

Most of my responses to his rapid fire questions were well that depends on during which time I was never able to finish the explanation. His objective was to start a social network in conjunction with the release of a major product offering and subsequent massive media coverage on the product. He told me he had 45 days before the release of his new product and how could he get a social network up in time. I told him it was possible but there was a lot of details that needed to be thought out and planned so that his network created value long term. He ultimately said, OK, how much will you charge me to get a prototype up in 2 weeks?

My responseWithout your commitment to spend the time planning and thinking about hundreds of related issues and interactions what your asking for it is impossible. His response was I can give you no more than an hour a day and he said the other executive on the phone could also give about an hour a day. They simply dont get it! They suffer from The Attention Factor and what I will label as Continuous Partial Attention or CPA.

When I told him that his time commitment was not enough to insure a successful plan his response was OK, how much do I have to pay you to fill the void. He still didnt get it! Earlier he had asked what I charge per day for strategic advice and my response was That is based on your perception of value, I dont typically quote a daily rate. He was somewhat perplexed by my answer and came back to the same question four times during the interrupted conversation. My response remained the same which just further frustrated him and created a cramp in his brain.

The Values and Processes of the Relationship Economy will Disrupt our Thinking! What this person didnt understand is the very essence of the emerging Relationship Economy. With so much information surrounding us and our trained passion for quick answers we miss the value of learning and creating relations. Those that have learned to optimize our attention already have a significant advantage over others. Our attention is really the driver to getting massive personal leverage. Social Networking is the means which enables massive personal leverage, you can reach and give to a mass or swarm verses a few or a small gathering. Those who can accomplish the greatest mass of personal leverage will be those that gain the most in The Relationship Economy. Those that adopt, or I should say, transform their thinking and trust in the essence of human relations will perpetuate value faster than ever before. The dynamics we are all facing becomes the Paradox of Choice, which I will elaborate on in future post.
