Financing a college or a graduate education is not always easy. In fact, you should use all of available resources at your disposal. When applying to schools, it is important to discover which funding opportunities are available to you.

CHECK THE SPECIFIC DEADLINES Many schools have two application deadlines. The earlier application deadline allows you to apply for fellowships and scholarships that may not be available to you if you apply to the college at a later date. Often times, these application deadlines are only weeks apart from each other. If you can get your documents in order, it may benefit you to pay attention to the fellowship and scholarship deadlines.

FILL OUT YOUR FAFSA FORM Many applicants do not fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form allows you to receive federal grants and federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans. Additionally, it allows you to earn work-study money. Many do not fill out their FAFSA because they erroneously believe that they do not meet the necessary criteria. Do not limit yourself. You have no idea what you will receive.

RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES There are billions and billions of dollars available in scholarships and grants. While it may take some initiative on your part to uncover which scholarships and grants are available to you, it will more than likely pay off in the long-run. Keep in mind, though, when applying for scholarships, you should not have to provide any up-front fee to be considered.

Furthering your education can increase your earnings potential by thousands of dollars annually. However, for some, returning to school pinches their pocketbooks and wallets. If you can find ways to finance your education, without carrying tens of thousands of dollars in debt while doing so, you will come out ahead in the long run.
